Mariah is on a mission.
Unlike thousands of homesteaders who arrived in the Dakota Territory full of hope for a new life, Mariah Rose has come in search of her nephew. . .and hoping to head back East as soon as she finds him. Now out of her element in the vast expanse of frontier, and with only a scrap of paper to guide her, she’s not sure where to look next.
Ben Harris longs to know the story behind lovely Mariah Rose’s arrival in the Dakota Territory. But he’s not one to pry. She’ll explain in her own time. . . . Until then he has his own worries to wrestle.
But as Mariah continues her search, she never guesses that Ben might hold the answer to her quest—and might break her heart with the answer.
The Lilac Year Truly Yours Digital Editions Book 1020 edition by Janet Spaeth Religion Spirituality eBooks
I had such high hopes for this book. Mariah returns to New York City to find her sister has died from influenza and her nephew put on the Orphan Train. She immediately heads out to the Dakota Territory, after twisting some adoption agency's arms. She meets Ben and suddenly he offers her an abandoned farm next to his to stay. How fortunate! She tries to mix in with the community to find out where her nephew is. Good thing she's not a detective, because her fact finding is subpar. Spoiler Alert! It turns out Ben 's adopted son is her nephew. Apparently he was visiting a friend when Mariah showed up. What was incredulous was when she discovers this, she didn't put up much of a fight for custody! Then she decides if the lilac bushes surivive, then she is meant to stay in Dakota. There was only a small amount of romance.Product details

The Lilac Year Truly Yours Digital Editions Book 1020 edition by Janet Spaeth Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
On 01/11/2016 Babour Books republished Janet Spaeth's book, "The Lilac Year". You get 2 fantastic Christian Stories in this book.
Mariah is searching for her young orphaned nephew in the North Dakota Territory of 1887, but she's not sure he's even there. She meets homesteader Ben at the train station & he knows of a neighbor's home she can stay at long term. He's caring for neighbor's stock while they're away. A romance develops between Ben & Mariah. But will God reunite Mariah & her nephew?
The Bonus Story is "Rose Kelly". Rose is a visiting Chicago Reporter to Jubilee, Dakota Territory in 1879. She's doing a series of articles about Homesteading; & chooses to focus them around the handsome & reticent homesteader Erik. Rose quickly learns that her usual way of gathering information, is seen as manipulation by Jubilee's residents; & that privacy is highly guarded by everyone. A Romance develops between cautious Erik & inquisitive Rose, but her unthinking words ruin his life in Jubilee. Can Erik forgive Rose? Can God work it out so that Erik doesn't leave Jubilee, & loves her back? Read the book & find out!
I loved both of Ms. Spaeth's stories. Her prose grabbed my heart quickly. Her characters are fully developed, even though the stories are novella length. She provided me with enough Suspense, that I read straight through the novellas once I started each one.
Even though I received an ARC through NetGalley for an honest review , I highly recommend this wonderful book & author. & I would read any sequel for both stories. So please, Janet Spaeth, write them!
"The Lilac Year" (2016, Barbour) “also contains bonus novel of Rose Kelly,” both of which are by Janet Spaeth. The book, set to release in November, includes two standalone Christian historical romances set in Dakota Territory in 1887 and 1879, respectively. I received an ARC copy from NetGalley and Barbour in exchange for an honest review.
Overall rating 3 ¾ stars*
*(I’m keeping the star rating at 3 because I don’t round up my ratings. As is apparent, this was close to a 4 star read for me.)

The Lilac Year (2012, Harlequin), set in 1887 Dakota Territory
3 1/2 stars
The Heroine
Mariah Rose has been working two jobs for three years so that she can afford to move her poverty-stricken widowed sister Lorna and her nephew to better living conditions. Mariah travels from Massachusetts to New York City for a surprise visit, only to find that her sister had died five months previously, and her nephew Joshua had been sent on an orphan train to who-knows-where. Even though the placement of her nephew is confidential information, Mariah stumbles on a clue that might indicate where he has gone. Without hesitating, she boards a train to look for him in Fargo in Dakota Territory.
The Hero
Ben Harris is a true Dakota man. His nearest neighbors have left the area for the time being, and Ben is taking care of their animals. He is concerned about the property getting run down, so when Mariah arrives in town, Ben offers to allow her to stay on the property in exchange for keeping it lived in.
What I liked
*I did find a couple of awkward sentences in this story. However, there were definitely “goodies” to be found.
“When Mariah had been a rebellious adolescent, insisting that praying was silly because God already knew what she thought, Lorna had simply and sweetly said, as she knelt beside her bed for her evening prayers, ‘I pray your prayers too.’” That’s just pretty neat. -) And later “It was time to pray Lorna’s prayers.”
“I don’t know what I said. I don’t even know what I meant. Or what I meant to say. Or thought to say… Well, whatever I said, I’m sure I meant it.”
*I liked the secondary characters in the story.
What I didn’t like
*There’s definitely instalove here, which I don’t care for. “For some reason, he cared. Already, he cared. Was he foolish?”
Yes, he was! That is in chapter one! Mariah wasn’t as quick to care about Ben, but I still felt there was little basis for the level of interest she had.
*I thought it was strange that Mariah wasn’t more aggressive about finding Jacob. She wanted to be cautious so that people wouldn’t clam up, but she did very little to find him.

"Rose Kelly" (2008, Barbour), set in Jubilee, Dakota Territory in 1879
4 stars
The Heroine
*Rose Kelly is a society column reporter for the "Chicago Tattler." She’s very highly regarded, and it’s considered a coup for any socialite to have Rose present at an event. She’s rather direct and hard-nosed about ferreting out information, which is the way reporters are typically cast in any story I’ve ever read. I suppose to succeed, they need to be. Rose has decided to try something more serious and has committed to living in Jubillee, “a tiny whistle-stop town in the Dakota Territory,” for six months to write a series of articles on homesteading.
When her train arrives in Jubilee, Rose “let the movement carry her. Suddenly she was squeezed out into the front, to the open door. . . and she stepped into air. The footing she thought would be there wasn’t, and she dropped suddenly toward the platform.”
The Hero
This is a perfect opening to introduce the hero, and he does indeed materialize in the person of Eric Johansen, who does indeed keep Rose from harm. Eric has been in Dakota Territory for a few years, and farms on his homestead. This makes this a city girl and country boy kind of story. Rose is looking to write articles about homesteading, and she falls right into a homesteader. How handy!
What I liked
*Downy the duckling, and especially Big Ole, one of the horses
*I found lots of “goodies” in this story.
---“She had been on this train much too long. Every shudder and shimmy made her tense, knowing that the dreadful grating of metal on metal was about to begin.”
---“A lie never lived on its own. It had fingers that stretched into every part of his existence.”
---“When you need help Rose, go right to the top.”
What I didn’t like
*I thought that Rose’s friendship with Linnea was a little bit strange in the way it developed. I dislike spoilers, so I won’t be explaining that.
*I didn’t think Rose and Eric had enough basis for caring about each other.
***********************************************
I recommend this two-novels-in-one package to fans of historical Christian romance. Ms. Spaeth is worth reading to find the many “goodies” in her writing.
One dashed across the country with her looking for her nephew. It was heart gripping. One felt her panic at not knowing where he was when she got to where her sister had lived, and find him gone. The man who came to her rescue, was such a touching character. And oh the joy, and what a grand surprise when she found him!!! A beautifully written story. Drama, hope, sadness, love, and sweet.
