"The SPECTR series is paranormal romance with bite, for readers who’re looking for something a little extraordinary." - The Novel Approach Reviews

What happens when an exorcist falls in love with a demon he's sworn to destroy?

Caleb Jansen’s life is going from bad to worse. First he’s possessed by an opinionated vampire spirit who drinks the blood of demons, then pursued by a fundamentalist group who want him dead.

His only hope is hotshot federal exorcist John Starkweather…the last man Caleb should be falling for, and the only one he wants in his bed.

First off, I need to get this out there, this cover is horrible. I would have never purchased this book to read if it weren't for the fact that 1. I'd read some of the author's previous work and really loved it and 2. It wasn't already free. Hawk is a really talented writer in a genre sadly lacking in competent writers, but her books also have some of the worst covers (it put me off reading Whyborne & Griffin for ages as well), and I really hope that changes soon, because it makes me sad to think of how many readers are missing out on her work.

So, that being said, I really enjoyed this! Enough that I'm planning on buying the first series set, and getting down to business! The writing was great, the story was interesting and surprisingly easy to follow, and I loved the characters! I'm really curious to see how everything plays out. My one qualm was that it was definitely way too short, and didn't so much feel like the end of a book, as the end of a large chapter or the end of a part of a larger book. But since I can go out and buy the rest of the series now, I'm not overly bothered.

This book is FREE on and it's the #1 in the SPECTR series. It's a very interesting story, well written, with a lot of action and full of surprises! It has it all demons, vampires, paranormal powers, exorcists and a lot of MYSTERY!

I loved this story because it gave me something different, an unexpected triangle.

I must mention the cover isn't my favorite. Maybe because it didn't match my imaginary Caleb. But you have to look at the beautiful cover of the #5 book.
John's pictures on the other covers made me droll.

Well this is my first book by Jordan L. Hawk and was recommended in the most wonderful Facebook Group H2 (Hassell & Hall). Even if I am not a paranormal fan, I wanted to give it a try. I read another paranormal/vampire book few days ago, Vespers, and loved it!

This book was very different from what I expected. Better. After reading the presentation, I thought we'd get to fear for Caleb's life while he works with the "extremist group who would kill him if they found out about his talent". I thought most of the book would be about him trying to hide his true nature, the fact he is an unregistered paranormal. But this story surprised me a lot. In a good way.

It was a little bit confusing at one point, BUT after Gray came into scene, I was glued to the pages.

Caleb and Gray were a great combination! Caleb wanted to avenge his brother's death, and Gray was trapped for the first time in a mortal's body.

John is a beautiful blue-eyed exorcist who works at SPECTR. He is the best in his field, but he discovers he can't deal with Caleb's situation. John tries so hard to win Caleb's trust. Caleb is very attracted to John but fights it, because John is everything Caleb ran from.

Gray is an ancient spirit, a vampire, a "drakul". He seemed so lost but very honest, innocent in his own way. He experiences everything for the first time the colors, the smells, the feelings, the joy.

"He drifted down slowly, languorously. He still felt Gray, but the drakul was very small and quiet stunned and confused and mercifully silent."

I absolutely loved the discussions between Caleb and Gray. Can't wait to read more!
I've had this novella for a while (being already a fan of Ms. Hawk's gaslit dark fantasy M/M romance novel series Whyborne and Griffin), but hadn't started it, partly because the cover image, though accurate for Caleb/"Gray", isn't really my style, and partly because I thought the content might not be either. I finally decided to read it today, and happily found that I quite liked it, after all.

I've read JLH's 1st Hex series novella, and the blurbs for the next two, and my criticism is that they introduce sex too soon and w/o emotional connection as a foundation. (As for the Hex short stories, well, they're short, so...) That's not true this time, since there's no more than reluctant attraction until the end, as meanwhile Caleb must come to some kinds of terms with the entity ("I'm NOT a demon!") now sharing his body, and John must decide whether he can/should trust him/them.

The sensory details throughout as Gray experiences color and scent (other than that of "his" demonic prey) and emotional intensity for the first time, imbuing them with a richness *Caleb* has never felt/appreciated before, either, immerses the reader in the book. BTW, I put "his" in quotes there because gender is another bit of "mortal nonsense" that was irrelevant until now to the etheric entity John christens "Gray".

N.b., there are short sections told entirely from Gray's PoV, and there the narrative is in present tense, which I rarely like, but it worked here. Gray has lived very much in/of the present, knowing nothing more than hunting and feeding, and resting in between. The majority of the book, however, alternates between Caleb and John's respective limited-third-person past-tense-narrative PoVs.

The world-building is established, though bound to be deepened in subsequent installments. Apparently, registered "paranormally abled" individuals have few civil rights, with it being legal, for example, to fire them for no other reason. Caleb's protective parents hid his minor telekinetic ability until they died, and taught him and his older brother Ben to continue keeping it absolutely secret. They've distrusted SPECTR, the paranormal policing organization (necessarily staffed by paranormals though it is), most of all. Caleb now must painfully re-evaluate how Ben (and his zealot wife/widow, now Caleb's last family) truly felt about "'mals" before Ben was killed by a demon, and whether John is correct in his own much more favorable attitude toward SPECTR (which saved him as a youth, having been cast off into an abusive "rehab" program by *his* parents' rejection when his paranormal "gift" manifested).

Demonic possession of willing hosts (called Fausts) or unwilling victims inevitably leads to bloody loss of control and devolution, as a human becomes an unthinking ghoul, a therianthrope (such as a lycanthrope), an incubus, or other predatory monster. Gray is clearly an "apex predator", so worry about Caleb's fate is only reasonable, especially considering the changes already made to his strength, speed, healing, etc., despite how recent the possession is. The demon all three leads are driven to hunt in this volume, for their own different reasons, is murderous but still enough in control to be dangerously canny, and Gray's ability to track it is valuable.

There are actually more questions not yet answered about John's past than Caleb's, such as what happened in "the succubus case" that still troubles him, and why he's perhaps too willing to take risks, despite what seems a light and flirtatious personality that surprises Caleb in a "brainwashed" government agent.

I'm eager to continue with the story.
Oh, and it's well-proofread. I already knew JLH's standards there are high.
